Patriarchy

The CWC is organising a series of online listening sessions and discussions with women from around the world on the topic of ‘Patriarchy’, in particular ‘how Jesus challenged the patriarchy of his time and what this means for the Catholic Church today’.

The Catholic Church's hierarchical structure, with its exclusively male decision-making authority and priesthood, is a reflection of the patriarchal system in society. Yet Jesus' actions and teachings reveal him to be a transformative figure who challenged the patriarchal norms of his time

Jesus treated women with dignity and respect, speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well in a radical act that crossed both gender and ethnic boundaries. He publicly affirmed Mary of Bethany's choice to sit at his feet and learn from him, a role traditionally reserved for male disciples. Women were also among his closest followers, supporting his ministry financially, and were the first witnesses to his resurrection. Mary of Magdala, who was the first to meet the risen Jesus, was entrusted with the task of proclaiming the central message of the Christian faith and is known as the Apostle to of the Apostles.

The paradox of a patriarchal church being far from the liberating message of Jesus who supposedly is its raison d'être gave it origin – is a central point of theological and academic debate. More and more believers are recognising that many of these patriarchal structures deviated from Jesus’ message of equality and inclusion of for all human beings. The ongoing dialogue highlights the tension between tradition and a deeper understanding of Jesus's revolutionary ministry.

Join us as we discuss ‘Patriarchy’, and its impact on the Church and even every aspect of life and search for our responses to make change.
