What if I tell you? – Religious Sisters in India Reporting on Abuse

Religious sisters in India have just published an unprecedented study “It’s High Time. Women Religious speak up on Gender Justice in the Indian Church”. It is the outcome of a questionnaire sent to women religious superiors across India, the country with the largest number of religious sisters (estimated at about 90,000). The study, initiated in May 2018 and commissioned by the Conference of Religious India - Women’s Section, documents a vast range of abuse against female religious, such as low wages, property matters, harassment and verbal abuse, ignoring their personal competence in the mission or refusal of sacramental celebration. It also proposes concrete steps for bringing change. Meet the authors who worked on this extraordinary publication: Sister Dr. Hazel D’Lima DHM, Sister Noella de Souza MCJ, and Brother Philip Pinto, CFC. Dr. Astrid Lobo Gajiwala will moderate their conversation. The meeting will be held in English and simultaneously translated into German and Italian.

Sisters Solidarity Fund

Too often the work and lives of religious sisters are hampered by stagnant Church structures and habits that do not allow their charisms to fully flourish. Too often intransparent power structures and manipulation lead to various kinds of abuse (e.g. economical, spiritual, sexual, abuse of power or conscience). Many of the sisters affected by those abuses stay silent about the dangerous conditions also because they fear they will be forced to leave and will not find support and safety outside of the convent. For all those women, members of Catholic religious communities (regardless of their canonical status), who are at risk of being expelled or abandoned, Voices of Faith initiates a financial support program.

Umsteuern Robin Sisterhood e.V.

On Monday 21 June 2021, the association “Umsteuern Robin Sisterhood e.V.” was founded in Germany. The association supports people, institutions, and self-help groups who have suffered from violence in the church. Women, in particular, lack an independent contact point in the church, where they can turn to if they have suffered violence in the church. Through its structure, the Roman Catholic Church supports a system that discriminates against and violates people on the basis of their gen-der, their lifestyle, or their sexual orientation,” said the founders of the association.

Online Event: Australia’s Plenary Council

Peter Wilkinson and David Timbs are members of a small, Melbourne based, Australian Catholic reform advocacy group Catholics for Renewal. It was founded in 2011 by a few practicing Catholic women and men, committed to the vision and promise of Vatican II. Their first public engagement was in response to the revelations of the enormous scope of the clerical child sexual abuse catastrophe in Australia. The group prepared submissions to the 2013 Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into the “Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Organisations” and to the 2013-2017 “Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse”. The submissions by Catholics for Renewal were responsible for effecting significant changes in State laws and Church safeguarding protocols. Since its announcement of an Australian Plenary Council in 2016 Catholics for Renewal has devoted their collective energies into setting out what they are convinced are the essential systemic reform and renewal measures that will assist in getting the Catholic Church in Australia back on mission. This has now been published in book form. Please click on MORE INFO to book your FREE ticket on Eventbrite. You will then be sent an email before the event with a ZOOM link

Women Disturb

“Women disturb. This means much more than being troublesome with petitions on the concerns of women's dignity and equality in the Roman Catholic Church. Women productively disturb the system of an institution that is deeply clerical and masculine. They disturb by their presence, by a different look, by questions and approaches that differ and complement one-sided perspectives.” We are honored and excited to invite you to zoom presentation of the new book by Sister Dr. Katharina Ganz. In a fresh and uncompromised way she is analyzing this fruitful presence of women in the Church that pushes this institution to come closer to the Gospel message. With honesty she is describing what is frustrating for Catholic women and what needs to be changed so the dignity of all is respected. This event will be spoken in GERMAN and simultaneously translated to ENGLISH and ITALIAN.
